Types of KPIs
This lesson builds practical understanding of healthcare KPI systems using a high-reliability, quality-management, and performance-improvement lens.
Learning outcomes
- Identify major KPI categories used in healthcare organizations.
- Distinguish leading and lagging indicators.
- Match KPI types to quality, safety, financial, and patient-centered goals.
Common KPI categories
Healthcare KPIs can be grouped into quality, safety, operational, financial, workforce, patient experience, compliance, and strategic growth categories.
Leading and lagging indicators
Lagging indicators show results after performance has already occurred. Leading indicators provide early signals that help teams intervene sooner. Mature KPI systems intentionally combine both.
Balancing KPI categories
A throughput initiative should not be judged only by faster discharge times. It may also require balancing indicators for readmissions, patient understanding, staff workload, and boarding.
Choosing the right KPI mix
The right mix depends on strategy, risk profile, service line priorities, and the maturity of improvement systems.
